Hi, Dr. Dawson. Unrelated to this post, do you know when the RSV vaccine for senior citizens should be out? I asked my PCP about getting the vaccine for my parents, but I haven't heard a timeline.

Not until the fall — the goal is to have the available in time for the respiratory illness season to begin (October-ish), but a few things need to happen. First, the CDC Director has to sign off on the recommendation for adults 60+ to get the vaccine (her advisory committee approved them, but officially she needs to sign off on the approval). Then the vaccine developers must manufacture and ship vaccines. Walgreens is saying they hope to have stores stocked nationwide by October. Without crazy funding — like Operation Warp Speed — that allowed for vaccine testing and manufacturing to be done simultaneously, there is a lot of work to be done between approval of the RSV vaccine and distribution into the arms of older adults.

Fingers crossed they are available in the fall!
